Communities of practice in flood risk and levee management

Communities of practice in flood risk and levee management

Chair: Ludolph Wentholt (STOWA) and Petra Goessen (HHNK)

TOUS POUR UN – ALL FOR ONE
UN POUR TOUS – ONE FOR ALL

Good Flood Defence lies not only in infrastructure (levees, dams, sluices, barriers etc) or tools, modelling or the governance of water management arrangements. How import they may! Added value can be obtained by increasing the professional attitude and behaviour of the flood defence manager and the levee practitioners. So knowledge of both the levee practitioners and the flood defence managers is a key asset for a professional organisation.

This special session will give you in four short pitches (max 5 minutes) examples of both formal and informal networks which already exist. What we are searching for and where we need your help and input is defining topics where you are struggling with to get to a higher level of professionalism and where already somewhere else in the flood risk colleagues, do not necessarily from your organisation or even your country, can help you.

We will use the metaphor of the four musketeers, Aramis, Athos en Porthos and D'Artagnan for this session.

What probably few people know is that D'Artagnan when become a promoted to lieutenant a few years later dies (1673) before the walls of the city of Maastricht in the Netherlands.

Not only the Dutch-French connection will be exposed (what 343 years can do) , but through three pitches the three other musketeers roles will also be presented through the I-Cold initiative to hold a levee session at the Vienna congress in 2018, the Kring of Coastal Engineers, the Interreg initiative Bølgen (are you ready to act) and the USSD levee committee.
