Natural and nature based solutions for flood defence
Natural and nature based solutions for flood defence
Chair: Ellis Penning (Deltares)
Climate change causes new challenges to flood risk management and a quest for new, more flexible and adaptive solutions. Extreme events such as hurricanes Katrina and Sandy are requiring rethinking of traditional approaches to flood defence.
More and more Nature Based Solutions for Flood Defence (NBFD) are identified and are becoming a feasible alternative or addition to traditional flood risk reduction measures. In some countries pilots are being tested, or larger scale nature based works are being carried out as part of a green solution to disaster risk reduction.
In this workshop we want to share with you the state-of-the-art in Nature Based Flood Defence Solutions, and discuss with you the pro’s and con’s of these measures. We want to know what makes them specifically successful or difficult to implement in different countries around the world, in order to come to a better understanding of their potential impact in the global DRR strategies.
